SAS Hurley Classic Dec 2nd Information

November 30th, 2007 · No Comments

Hello everyone - The information below is correct. We are having a few problems with our web at the moment so please pass this around as the arrangements.

Of all the freestyle sites throughout the world Hurley Weir is perhaps the most famous with a history of over 25 years of freestyle activity. The site has witnessed the evolution of firstly Rodeo and then Freestyle and provides a recreational and competition site for many paddlers. Despite its reputation in the canoeing world the weir produces a friendly feature and even friendlier eddies.

The SAS Hurley Classic is all about recognising the many ways the weir is paddled. It is essentially a competition with serious athletes showing there skills along side people starting out. But it is more than that; The SAS Hurley Classic has become a social event allowing canoeists to meet and thus providing a route for friendships to be formed. This then provides a tool to strengthen our canoeing community and through this provide ever increased possibilities.

So to this year’s event.

The Main Event
All paddlers with white water experience and a solid roll are welcome but we recommend paddlers have experience of surfing waves and holes to make the most of the day.

Access is from the SAS side – for directions NOTE – Please do not park on the Hurley side unless you are camping at The Hurley Riverside Park.

Rules: The competition will run in jam session style 20 minute heats, paddlers can take as many rides as they like during the heat, within the running order. Paddlers may take up to 30 seconds each ride until they flush or are buzzed off by a judge. Buzzing off occurs if you don’t score a move within 20 seconds or your 30 seconds has expired. Paddlers will be scored on the top four scoring moves that they complete during their runs. A scoring list will be available on the day (this will be representative of current freestyle scoring systems).

Linked moves will score an extra accumulator that equals 50% of the total value of the linked moves.

Please bring all your own equipment. There may be a limited number of freestyle demo boats on the day.

SAS and the Environment Agency
SAS the main event sponsors who also own the bank side we run the event from are fully committed to helping canoeing at Hurley and in the wider community. That commitment is represented through there sponsorship and permission to use there land.

The Environment Agency own and manage the weir structure. There support is initially in allowing the competition to take place and by allowing us to use there facilities. Our relationship with the EA has helped ensure weirs are set how canoeists like them and that they stay open to the last moment.

These are unique and precious relationships that Hurley paddlers and spectators need to be respectful of both during the competition and when visiting the weir. Below we have outlined a code canoeists can use at Hurley.

1. Take home everything you brought with you. Don’t leave litter on the Weir or SAS bank. There is a bin in the public car park in Hurley Village. During the competition we will place bins around the SAS bank.
2. Don’t climb all over the weir. During the competition the weir bridge gates will be open. If you want to stand on the bridge please enter and exit through these gates.
3. Observe the recommendations of the signage. We place signs around the SAS site advising where people connected with the SAS Hurley Classic are allowed to go. Please adhere to these.
4. No vehicles apart from the KJO emergency vehicles are allowed on the riverside bank.

Prizes We have been juggling this year to come up with a prize format that works better. So here it is
1. 1st place = 50% or £40 (if 40% is lower that £40) of the total entry fee in that class. Cash prizes will be made via cheque.
2. 2nd place = certificate
3. 3rd place = certificate

We also have a heap of spot prizes to throw out.
